currently have 50 gal electric heater. we have two big commerical dish washers that service surgical instruments. our demand has increased and appears the 50 gal is not doing the job. Would a gas heater be more efficent and if so need cost. There is a gas line close to current heater from a gas heater in whse. so hook up should be no problem.

I have a 50 gallon lowboy electric water heater that I'd like to replace. Also need an expansion tank to bring up to code.

More homeowners in America use electric hot water heaters than any other model. This is because electric water heaters are seen as less expensive and safer than gas models. The cost of purchasing an electric water heater is much lesser than a gas covered model. Installation costs are also cheaper because of the relative simplicity of installing an electric model. However, bear in mind that while installing an electric tankless water heater, you may need to reconfigure the electric wiring of your home.
A basic electric water heater model can be bought for lesser than $700, while a gas model costs a minimum of $1000. The cost of installation is also lesser because electric water heaters do not involve complicated installation procedures. However, in the case of electric tankless water heaters, you may find the need to change the electrical configuration of your home to support the new heating technology. Generally however, in a comparison between gas vs. electric water heaters, electric models are seen as cheaper. However, the energy efficiency over a long period of time may actually not be worth the price you save during purchase and installation. If you already have an electric water heater and want to continue with an electric model, consider replacing your existing model for a newer more energy efficient one. There are other ways like timers and insulation jackets that can help increase the energy efficiency of your unit.
Electric hot water heaters tend to get a bad rep because of their comparatively low energy efficiency. However, newer models are required to meet newer and tougher federal energy rules that require an increase in energy efficiency of up to 5% for electric models. You can also install devices like timers, and use insulation jackets to increase the efficiency of your electric water heater. Brands like Bosch electric water heater and Bradford White electric water heater are regarded as some of the best electric water heaters out there.
